Today I shared a few favorite poems with the students and we discussed a couple of them. Then students looked through many different books containing collections of poems – many varieties and topics. Students were to choose 5 or more poems that they liked and copy them onto the pages of their poetry portfolio for later inclusion in their poetry book project. We talked about the importance of giving credit to the author when copying, as well as preserving the structure and format of a poem when copying it.
Here are some of the poems I chose to share from in the classes today(not all were read in each class):
“The Lamb” – W. Blake, “Annabel Lee” – Poe, “To-Day” T. Carlyle, “There Was a Little Girl” – Longfellow, “She Dwelt Among Untrodden Ways” – Wordsworth, “When I was One-and-Twenty” – Housman, “Music, When Soft Voices Die” – P.B. Shelley
HW: None – But feel free to find poems outside of class to add to your personal collection of favorites!
